Morning - Robbed From
The Sky
Weather: 54, cloudy,
and light wind.
MORNING HUNT - This
morning I hunted the point again. Just after 7:40 2 does came through a
hole in the fence and walked by my Double Bull blind (5 yards) and drank
from the water, which is almost dried up now. I wanted to take a picture
but they were too close to risk it.
A longhead doe walked up
from the opposite direction and a 4th one was behind it. I have a doe tag
and wanted to fill it if possible. The deer were passing through and wouldn't
be in range long. The longhead turned broadside and I drew and shot through
the blind's netting and put my arrow in the vitals. All the deer scattered
but I followed the one I shot. It disappeared from my view in 50 yards.
This was a good hit and the
doe should be down within 80-100 yards. Once again I used the Innerloc
EXP Expandable broadhead and had opened the blades (when you do
that they in lock place) so I could shoot through the blind's camo netting.
It worked perfect and my arrow hit on the money.
The wild turkeys were very
vocal and loud this morning and I needed to wait to recover the doe so
I stayed in the blind and kept hunting. A flock walked down the woods road
past me and through the gate. They were hens and young jakes from this
years hatch.

A second, larger flock took
the same route. Turkey calls filled the air around me, there were more
coming. I waited but it eventually got quiet. I wanted to recover the doe
asap and decided to wait another 10 minutes more to be sure the turkeys
were out of the area.
The minutes slipped by and
suddenly, without a sound, a wild turkeys walked up on my right along the
fence. They kept coming, this was a flock of 50 or more and they
were briskly filing by 5 yards away. I got my bow ready and checked for
longbeards. They were going through the gate and walking by me at the same
time, like a wild turkey train. Bit not a longbeard in the lot.
As the last of them went
through the gate and disappeared I noticed something that froze my blood.
In the sky, past the turkeys,
in the direction that the doe had ran ... buzzards!
I took a quick picture from
the blind and ran to them, hoping they had only just located it and weren't
on the ground yet. When I was almost there at least 20 buzzards flew up.
Several stayed in the area as I stared at what they had done to the doe.

The deer was already skinned
and eaten in the rear and the broadhead's cut had given them entrance to
the chest cavity. I took a picture at a distance, a closer one would truly
turn your stomach. The time on the pic was 9:43am, less than two hours
since the killing shot had been made and the doe made it's run of 80 yards.
Food
Plot
With
the coming of the killing frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop
of acorns on the ground have died or gone bad. My green food plot really
stands out now in Early December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys covered the
plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is
jumping with both bucks and does. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans,
planting and progress.
