Afternoon
At 1:30 I was back out at
the Point. A young buck that walked the opposite side of the nearby fence
was the only action until 3:30 when I noticed a hen near the gate with
a very lame walk favoring its left leg. It looked roughed up. For some
reason it stood near the fence, quite still, for 40 minutes.
Right after we heard distant
gobbles the bird finally limped away. Then I saw the 3 gobblers in the
picture below, they went to the crippled hen and pecked at it. That's a
new one on me, I can't help but wonder why that happened.

I started yelping and purring
to see if I could distract the gobblers. The male birds looked my way and
made their way through the gate. Other turkeys were behind them. One jake
grabbed the lead and walked toward me.

But it wasn't his day to
be my dinner guest. All the turkeys soon left.
The sun sunk into the trees
and two yearling does came from across the fence and went into the woods
behind me.
Food
Plot
With
the coming of the killing frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop
of acorns on the ground have died or gone bad. My green food plot really
stands out now in Early December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys covered the
plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is
jumping with both bucks and does. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans,
planting and progress.
