Afternoon: Better Weather
Noon - I drove to
Storms Hamburgers and had a Special. Nothing warms you up like a huge,
hot hamburger and fries made from real potatoes (with some Hot Chocolate).
I was back in the Double Bull blind before two.
Weather Now: light
cloud cover, blue skies, 36 degrees, occasional light gusts of wind. The
front blew through and it could be a good afternoon.
4:42pm - Two does
just walked to the top of the hill. I'm signing off so the light from my
computer screen won't glow inside the blind.
6:50pm - I saw two
more does on the hill after sunset.
Morning: Cold But Busy
At Daylight - 13
degrees and gusty. A doe came into the food plot
and I saw something out of place on the woods edge. I binoculared it. A
buck with a high rack. The buck hung out on the edge and the picture light
improved in time to catch him on disk.
A new buck. He started across
the food plot and I got a pic and grabbed my bow, just in case. The buck
circled behind the tree I have the Power Wick in and he caught scent
of it. I refreshed it yesterday so it must have smelt good because the
buck raised his head and breathed it in, and then moved around the tree.
My camera was on the tripod and I took a pic. You can see the buck and
the wick on the right, hanging on the tree.

A 6 point -- with a thick
neck and he has been on the go because he is thin for his size. He put
me too the test and stopped 15 yards from me and checked the area out.
I let him walk. It's just not his day today.

After he got scent of the
wick he never paid attention the the doe in the plot again. He walked to
the furthest part of the plot and chewed up grub for a few seconds. Then
he returned to the woods.
Afterward a doe and yearling
came in. Then 3 does and finally another solo doe.
That's were we are at 11:31
on this chilly morning.
Food
Plot
With
the coming of the killing frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop
of acorns on the ground have died or gone bad. My green food plot really
stands out now in Early December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys covered the
plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is
jumping with both bucks and does. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans,
planting and progress.
