Dec 22 (Last Update 10:46am)
Early | 8:22 | 9:01 | 10:46 |

Afternoon:
4:55 - I saw a bomber buck at 2:30. He ran down the hill and into the brush. Otherwise it's been uneventful, in deer terms. It's been gusting hard and windy. Weather.com says it's 24 degrees and feels like 13 because of the 15 mph wind. It's got that right. Also, it should snow tonight.

So there is less than an hour of hunting light left. I'm shutting the computer down now and we will see what happens.

Morning:

10:46am - Another Buck, can you see it?
The wind just laid and now only gusts occasionally. I saw a deer on the edge of the woods and as I checked it out I had a thought. Lots of people are telling me they are following this online hunt and log on several times a day. So if you are one of those folks see if you can find the buck that I just saw. I made it in sizes 1024x768 or 800x600 or 640x480

Before Daylight - Half way to the NorthStarr stand on the hill it started raining. So I changed plans and went to the blind, that's another advantage of the  Double Bull, you're out of the weather, 34 degrees when I left the house.

Because I had intended to hunt the hill I was extra early and had a half hour wait until I could make out my surroundings. I binoculared up the white on the back of a deer's tail. When I finally could see what was attached to the tail it was a buck. He was in the food plot, browsing and watching the hill and woods edge, from 8:49 until 7:34 -- in the rain.

The temperature is dropping and at 8:22 I was considering going to the house to get wham. No deer would be out in this rain and cold. At 8:23 two bucks walked out of the draw and came to the food plot, the part that's bow range close to me.

The early morning buck (L) and on e of the later young bucks.

The two bucks browsed until 8:52 -- which is when the rain turned into hail. The bucks shot out of here like they were rockets.

9:01am - Time to break out the HotHands and warm up my mouse fingers. Cold toes are in the making too and I slid some Foot Warm-up packets in by boots. It is frosty out. Still raining. Still hailing.

Food Plot
With the coming of the killing frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop of acorns on the ground have died or gone bad. My green food plot really stands out now in Early December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.

Wild Turkeys covered the plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is jumping. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans, planting and progress. 2004 Food Plot Project.
