Dec
20 - Luck & The Freak Buck
Daybreak
the Freak Buck | Mid Day | Afternoon Hunt |
Afternoon - I zipped,
no deer at all.
Meanwhile,
the Duck went to the canyon and set up his Double Bull blind where he has
seen wild turkeys several times. He brushed it in and waited. Forty minutes
later he heard turkeys and yelped back at them with his box call. A few
minutes later wild
turkeys started coming through the cedars. They were all hens so he
took a few pictures.
45 minutes passed and he
heard turkeys again. He yelped at them and a bigger flock came in. The
white hen was with them. He saw one gobbler but couldn't get a shot.
Mid Day - The Duck
and I drove to Wal Mart and I bought 6 bottles of Special Golden Estrus.
I used one to refresh my Power-Wick (both from Wildlife
Research Center)) and got back in my blind.
The wind got up strong after
lunch.
Morning - Freak
Back Again
"Never underestimate the
power of good choices .. or dumb luck." That's a quote that I jotted down
once. Both of those things went into play this morning.
Daybreak - A deer
walked out of the dark and stopped at the perfect pace for a shot. The
binoculars showed it to be a young 7-point. Minutes later a shadow entered
the food plot, again the binoculars, the Freak.
Over the weekend I decided
that I'd let the bucks decide which one to shoot. I've seen and photographed
3 bucks that are trophies to me and the number of days left to hunt are
almost gone. It's time to set the camera down and pick a spot.
The Freak stopped to browse
on the big leaf plants in the food plot. 40 yards away. Then he walked
over near the younger buck. It was still too dark to aim properly.
Daylight came in slow motion,
one ray of light at a time.
Finally. Morning light.
Freak was now about 30 yards
out. Too far. More light, and soon it was daylight. Again Freak walked
over by the younger buck, now he was under 16 yards. I drew.
Freak turned towards me and
browsed on oats. I held, waiting for him to turn broadside.
He didn't and finally I had
to let down.
Deer appeared on the woods
edge, they were running back and forth. Freak turned his big head to see
what was up. He looked interested, he was gonna leave.
I drew.
He turned broadside. I moved
my top pin toward the right spot -- but the other buck stepped forward
and blocked my shot. Freak started walking away. The young buck was still
in the way. When Freak was out of range I let down.
Like I said earlier "never
estimate dumb luck".
And the same for "good choices".
I didn't take a quick or questionable shot. Freak still does not know I
am in his world. Neither do the other two. Life is good. Deerhunting is
good.
The Duck saw several does
at the Dry Tank stand. He wanted to see turkeys but they didn't come through
his area today.
Food
Plot
With the coming of the killing
frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop of acorns on the ground
have died or gone bad. My green food plot really stands out now in Early
December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys covered the
plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is
jumping. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans, planting and progress.
