16 - The Broken Tine Buck

8:05am - A lone doe
entered the food plot and I took a Night Shot pic at 7:11. A big bodied
deer walked into the viewfinder and I thought it was the Freak buck, until
I saw 2 sets of antlers. I looked at him with my binoculars. His
rack was heavy (for our area) and it had a broken tine on the left main
beam.
The
doe trotted away along my fence line and this new buck followed. She hopped
the fence and went into the 20 acre field across the road.
He stopped.
And walked back to the
food plot and stuck his nose in some green stuff and started eating.
The light improved and I took his picture and got my bow. I figured him
for 18 or 19 yards, and waited to see if he would turn 90 degrees. Finally,
he did.
Two does entered the food
plot and my broadside opportunity only lasted an instant because he ran
the does up the hill and down into the draw.
Ten minutes later
I saw him in the trees to the south, standing and watching the area. I
have a feeling he will hang out here and watch for does that come to the
plot.

10:15am - Back Again
-
The Broken Time buck walked out of the draw and went to the hill top and
stood watching the area. I pictured
him and waited. When two does came from across the road and he
followed them to the east.

2:16pm - Just hung a
Power Wick (above) scent dripper loaded with #1 Select Estrus. Then
I made a drag from the far end of the plot to me using Trail's End #307,
(all from Wildlife.com).
The wind blows across the
plot to the right my blind so the dripper can only lure a buck for a limited
area. Today I backed up to the next furthest tree and picked up the area
where the buck this morning went. The main thins about it is The
Scent Wick worked on a buck 2 days ago but nothing has been in the right
place since then.
Both times I made the drag
before I started it at the closest edge of the food plot. Today it runs
all across the food plot and any buck in the plot should small it.
Now, a buck to cross the
drag trail or to smell my dripper would be nice.

3:14: Three does
came from the draw and to the food plot. They just left. The sun is out
now and it's warmer. Come on #9, or mr. Freak, or Broken Tine. Or a buck
I haven't seen yet would be cool too.
Food
Plot
With the coming of the killing
frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop of acorns on the ground
have died or gone bad. My green food plot really stands out now in Early
December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys covered the
plot from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is
jumping. Here is the page for the Food Plot plans, planting and progress.
