| Dec 13 Morning:
FINALLY
IT ALL TURNS AROUND!
Dec
13 - Saturday: (Morning) At sunrise I was just about to the river
stand ground blind when I surprised a big bodied buck. It jumped the fence
into the adjacent field and stopped. I stayed behind cover and got in the
blind. At better light a buck came up on the right side of the blind and
stopped 5 yards away. It was large but had a narrow 6-pt rack. As I reached
for my camera a flock of wild turkeys walked out of the woods to the West.
They boldly walked right past the buck. He got visibly nervous and moved
on as did the turkeys. Fifteen minutes later the hunt turned to "All Good."
I heard another group of
wild turkeys on the hill above me and purred with my slate and did soft
clucks with my mouth call. The flock came down on a trail to my right.
They were at least 20, mostly hens; but I spied a couple of jakes. I took
this pic of one of the jakes,
set the camera on the ground. I waited for the other turkeys to clear away
from the jake and drew my bow. The sight's green fiber-optic pin head glowed
bright and I settled it on the bird. It bent forward and gave me a perfect
shooting angle. I put the green glow where it ought to be and touched
my release. The arrow ripped across the 8 yards to the gobbler. Feathers
flew into the air. The bird regained it's balance and took about 5 steps.
I thought, "what is this!" Ka-plop, the jake dropped. The other turkeys
walked around, they didn't know what had happened.
Equipment Notes
Grim Reaper Broadhead:
I shot the wild turkey with Grim Reaper's 100 grain broadhead. The arrow
smacked through it and went 10 yards further than the bird did. This expandable,
3 blade broadhead is a "wild turkey decimator" -- it slammed through the
wing feathers and out through the fan, messing it up it's symmetry real
bad. The bird didn't know what happened, it straightened up, took a couple
of steps and gave out.
BowTech Pro 40: This
bow shoots my 2216 arrows like a rocket. That said, I can not say enough
about how quiet this bow is. It draws smoothly and quietly. And makes less
noise when I shoot than any bow I have ever hunted with. With 20 wild turkeys
all around my blind the bow has to draw quietly. Usually turkeys scatter
when you shoot one. But this time the impact of the arrow was much louder
than the shot and the flock was not alarmed.
