Are Wild Turkeys Out When It Rains?
Dec 12 - Friday: Driving out to hunt I noticed a big racked 8-pt near the Shoemaker's Fence area. He stood behind some saplings and watched me pass in the road. The weather was mid 30's and overcast with frequent rain showers all day. I hunted the ground blind at Rick's River Stand rather than sit in the rain and get soaked. The blind is in a strip of woods that runs along the river. There is a field adjacent to the woods and the turkeys travel along the edge. On the morning hunt I saw a black wild hog on a nearby trail. When it was 15 yards, but still in the brush, it smelled me and retreated. The afternoon hunt was better.
An hour before dark I heard wild turkey noises and talked to them with my slate call (purrs and soft clucks). NEXT
