DAY #2, Ohio 2000
Deerhunt
Our groups total deer sightings today,
so far: 9 Deer, 3 bucks.
Morning Hunt -
Scrape City
My watch beeped softly once, it was 8:00am and, although I didn't know
it yet, the deer were about to move. Two does came into the area and when
they got near the scrape one of them started in my general direction and
the other one flagged and followed. Minutes later an 8-point walked silently
into view from a ridge to my left. It went to the scrape and hooked branches
and worked the scrape for several minutes. The scrape is at least 90 yards
away but I checked the buck out in my binoculars, an 8-point 14 incher,
fairly heavy beams for a Texas buck but not for here. He walked around
the scrape area smelling the ground. Then he moved off down the hollow
to my right. Ten munutes later a spike buck walked up out of the hollow
and for several minutes he stood on the hill behind the scrape and checked
out the area and then walked over the ridge.. He left too soon. A doe came
out of the hollow and went to the scrape and mouthed branches and urinated
in the scrape. She left in the direction the 8-point had come from.
The closest any of these deer got to me was 60 yards so when I got to
the truck at 10:30 to meet Dennis I asked if we could move the stand and
get me in the mouth of the hollow. Dennis said a stand was there but they
moved it last week for another bowhunter, but we would move it back. And
we did. :-)
Dennis saw a yearling 6-point and a doe with a fawn. The Duck hunted
the North Starr stand a yearling 8-point and a doe. The buck came right
by him. We didn't hear from Doug Crabtree yet.
I didn't drink any coffee or eat anything this morning so we went to
the Ponderosa for lunch. He, he, I hit 'em pretty hard, they didn't make
any money on me today.
This afternoon I will be back in Scrape City and Dennis will be over
the ridge and in the next hollow, the Duck will hunt the Skyscraper stand
where he saw the big buck yesterday evening.
Afternoon Hunt
Dennis had a yearling 7-point walk under him and saw a bomber buck
at a distance. No deer moved through my area at Scrape City. The Duck 3
does at the Skyscraper stand.
Afterward we had to have a junk food fix and ate pizza at Pizza Hut
and chocolate sundies at McDonalds. Walking up and down all these hills
is making me real hungry.
