January 7 - Morning Hunt, Part 1

Rick Philippi and I drove to Sweetwater Creek Ranch starting at 6:30. Rick lives north of Fort Worth, Texas and the trip took only an hour. Mike Little met us and we unloaded some gear in one of the hunting lodges and got camoed up.

Mike is a congenial guy and an avid bowhunter. He told us the area had experienced a severe drought and what was normally lush green grass and brush now looked more like prairie land with rolling hills split up with craggy draws full of hard wood trees.

We drove around in Mike's truck until we spotted some buffalo about 1,000 yards away. Sticking to the ranch roads Mike got as close as he could. Driving slowly, Mike cut across cactus and prairie grass and drove up to about 70 yards from the buffalo and stopped.

Mike has a herd bull and he pointed him out as off limits. The big bulls were easy to recognize, their front humps stuck up higher than the rest of the buffalo. As a group, the herd nonchalantly moved along, seemingly unconcerned about us.

We were gonna get a quick education on buffalo.

I stepped out of the truck to take some pictures. There was not much cover but we used what there was and we soon got about 50 yards from them. This almost looked too easy.

When the buffalo saw us they immediately bunched up so the cows and younger buffalo surrounded the larger bulls. I guess this is an instinctive reaction dating back to the days when the indians hunted them for food, clothing and utensils.

About 15 minutes later the herd slowly moved further away from us, still keeping the larger bulls protected. We wanted to keep up with them and when we started walking in their direction they let us look at their back-sides going over a nearby hill.

We returned to the truck and eased up to the hill top. The buffalo were 400 yards down hill and appeared to be headed to a pond at the bottom of a wooded draw.  NEXT...
