Gettin' Ready At Freddie Bear Sports

August 6 - The Duck and I arrived at Fred Lutger's archery pro shop Freddie Bear Sports in Tinley Park, Illinois last night. We packed our hunting gear and food in Fred's trailer and pickup and went to his store for a couple of last minute things.

Fred shows Henry Martinez where a bear's vitals are located and goes over arrow placement to kill a bear. Henry will be on the hunt with us.

Fred shows the Duck (Don Beckwith) one of the products we will use on this year's bear hunt. It's called Bait Station Bear Bait made by Evolved Habitats. It has a jelly Donut flavor and is said to be a powerful bear attractant.

"How does it taste?" I asked Fred. As he checked it out the Duck waited impatiently for his chance at the jelly donut treat. (Ok, we're just acting up.)

Afterward, Fred gets a serious look at his face as he takes time out for some archery practice. As your can see, he is shooting fine.

At 7:00 tonight we are meeting Chef Klaus for dinner at his Steak & Seafood restaurant in Frankfort, Illinois. Tomorrow morning at 4:00 sharp we begin out 14 hour drive to bear camp in Ontario.

Bow Tune Up At Lake Country Archery

August 4 - I met the Duck at Lake Country Archery on Lake Fork in Texas. Richard, the owner, is a bow tune up super whiz and I wanted him to do a few things to my BowTech Tribute. First off, I messed up and ordered the wrong size draw length, 29-inches, and BowTech kindly sent me a 30-inch draw module for the bow's smooth draw cam. Richard put the modules on and then went to work on my short but important list of stuff to do.

Richard installed the No Peep from Timberline Archery on the bow and set the No Peep up. Next on my list was a new string loop. The loop on the bow was a flexible string and it was extra long to make up for the shorter draw. Richard replaced the loop with a stiffer chord -- which holds a "C" shape. That makes it much easier to hook up the release to it, and especially so if you need to get hooked up fast to make a shot. He also made it exactly the right length for my Fletcher Flathead release. 

Then he re-aligned my Whisker Biscuit arrow rest to accommodate the changes. Then he shot the bow several times and made a few adjustments. In no time he had it tuned for the changes.

Then I followed the Duck to his home and we loaded all of our gear in his pickup. Tomorrow morning we will hit the road at 4:00am and have a 14 hour drive to look forward to.
