Fall Black Bear Bowhunt With Fred Lutger

Group 2 - Day
3 - Duck or the Duck's gotcha
We skipped the usual "big"
breakfast and ate cereal and donuts. Then we all drove to Picnic to track
Jim Misiukiewicz's bear.
There was one drop of blood,
the size of a BB, on a leaf by the bait. There was no more blood.
I found the arrow nearby
and Fred picked up a paw print. He slowly followed paw prints, broken twigs,
upturned leaves, and bear scat for 60 yards -- to where the bear lay dead.
We were behind him so we
wouldn't disturb any sign and we heard Fred tell Jim to bring his tracking
string over to him. Jim did ... and saw his bear. Here
is Jim's hunt...
We took pictures of Jim and
his bear on the spot and the Duck took another at camp.
John, Bryant and Chef Klaus
went fishing and Fred checked 20 some baits to see where the bear action
was.
We ate spaghetti and plenty
of it for our 3:00 meal and everyone went hunting.
The Duck returned
to the Caution sited and got in his Double Bull Matrix once again. Shortly
after 8:00 a bear walked out of the brush and went to the logs and pulled
them apart. Don took its picture as it chewed on the bait bucket.
The bear sat down by the
bucket and casually looked around the area.
Time passed slowly as the
bear sat and watched its surroundings, for a long time.
Don exchanged the camera
for his bow (BowTech Patriot) and waited. Finally the bear stood up. Don
drew and consciously put his top pin behind the bear's shoulder. He held
extra long to be sure it was right and as he pulled the trigger on the
release the bear turned sharply and jumped into the brush.
The arrow made a cracking
noise but Don could not tell if he hit it or not. Half an hour later he
checked his arrow. He had missed.
He returned to camp and told
his story. Fred and I saw a sow with two cubs and a spooky bear. Doc and
Roy zipped.
John and Bryant zipped too
and their baits were not hit. For some unknown reason their baits had dried
up, it was time to move. And Fred told them he had just the place in mind.
