Day #1 -  Gary Bags HIs First Bear

Gary Nordhaus  - Gary has wanted to go bearhunting for the last 3 years and made it happen this year. He hunted the Power Line stand. On the first day of the hunt Gary went to the bait. It was hit. He rebaited it, hung a vanilla soaked rag on a nearby limb,  and put the logs back in place. He set a treestand up 75 yards from the bait (Gary is rifle hunting with a Remington model 700, 300 Ultramag.) 

At 6:20 he glimpsed a bear coming from behind the bait. It went right to the bait and smelled the vanilla rag. The bear pulled the logs off the bait, laid down and started eating. It was a head-on shot angle so Gary waited. Twenty five minutes later the bear stood up and repositioned himself on the bait. 

The wind was moving his tree and Gary could not shoot. Finally the wind let up and Gary wanted to shoot.

Gary centered the scope's crosshairs on the bear and shot it. The bear rolled and growled. Gary still had the bear in the scope and he fired two more shots. 

Forty five minutes later Gary got down and went to the truck. At 8:00 he returned to the stand and checked for sign at the bait. He found good blood. 

The next morning several hunters went with Gary and they took up the track and found the bear. 

Garry's Comments:
Gary said bear hunting is "awesome". Seeing a bear was just like seeing my first deer as a kid. My heart was pounding. Gary wants to do it again. His advice to new bear hunters is, "if you want to go don't pass up the chance if you can afford it and get the time off work. If you like deer hunting you will definitely enjoy bear hunting."
