Wrapping Up The 2004 Bowhunt In Ontario
by Fred Lutger

A few years back my side kick Donald (Duck) Beckwith and I were driving back to the states. We had just finished three hard weeks of bear camp. During those weeks we discussed making this our last guided bear hunt.

The weather had been hot, we dragged out and skinned 24 bears the last 2 weeks and Don and I were exhausted from the long days and hard work. We were half way through Wisconsin heading to Tinley Park, IL when we looked at each other and both broke into big grins. We knew we would be back.

I have been running guided bear hunts for 25 years. I could tell you more bear stories than any man alive. Over those years our hunts have a near 100% shot opportunity for my clients. This year was no exception. All eleven people in camp had opportunities to shoot a bear and ten took shots. The Duck passed on several bears because he was waiting for a particular bear he saw in the TrailTimer pictures. But our 2004 bowhunters had a great hunt and took home 9 bears.

I have 70 bear bait locations. This varies from year to year. This hunt I only used 24 stand locations. After the first day of baiting 22 baits were hit. Those bait locations were active each day for two weeks prior to the hunters arrival. I didn't feel the need to use the other locations for this hunt.

Bear Population Is Up
Since the closing of Ontario's spring bear season the population of bears in my management unit is on the increase. And the bears’ size is increasing. The smallest bear we killed this year was 125 pounds. The next smallest bear was 225 pounds! The largest bear weighed 385, a very respectable bear shot by my friend Robert Hoague.

Finding The Bears
With the aid of four TrailTimer Cameras we were able to monitor several bait locations by changing the camera locations every couple days. What a great hunting aid. We were able to pick the baits with the largest bears. I also used several TrailTimer 500 event monitors and was really surprised at the number of times each bait was visited throughout the day. Bears are known to be nocturnal but we were getting as much daytime activity as nighttime activity at most of the stand locations. Bears were visiting the baits at all hours, morning, afternoon and evening.

Our Goal: A Bear On The Ground
Double Bull sent a blind for Robert and I to use. Several years ago I used a natural ground blind and bow killed a nice bear at 15 yards. I really didn't know how the bears would react at the sight of a Double Bull pop up blind at the bait location. I put the blind up two days prior to opening day at the Blueberry Hill bait. This is a fairly open area and I didn't have to trim any foliage for a clear shot. The first night Robert and I used the blind, Robert's big bear walked all around us for 45 minutes.

The bear was oblivious of the blind. He stood in front of the blind at eight yards and allowed us to film and take pictures of him before Robert put an arrow elbow high through his lungs. The bear traveled less than 20 yards before he dropped. This on-the-ground level shot is deadly. And 8 yards, who could ask for a better shot?

The next day we set the blind up at the Caution bait for my hunt. A bear was on the bait in seconds after I got in the blind, I wasn't settled into my camp chair yet. Four bears visited that afternoon and evening. None of the bears were aware of the blind. This puts a whole new dimension into bear hunting. I can now set up a blind quickly and quietly for a fast set up at any of the locations. Next year I will clear each location for a ground shot.

Does this mean I'm trading in my tree stands? By no means. I still like the all around view from a lofty perch.  I think most bear hunters would be more comfortable around bears above the bears rather than sitting face to face at 10 yards in a stare down match.

Tree Stands
I use North Starr Treestands. I am a big man and I want a stand that is strong, quiet and easy to put up. My good friend Bill Goodwin makes North Starr stands. He knows more about tree stands and tree stand design than any person I know. As I get older I have grown to like ladder stands. For me they are easier to put up and are easy to climb. I also like Bill's climbing stick used in conjunction with his hang on stands. Again, it is easy to put up and easy and safe to use. Both work well in the thick Canadian woods.

Equipment
I used the Magnus Stinger 125 gr. 4-blade broadheads on Eastman Outdoors Carbon CX 3D 400 arrows. I fletched my arrows with three 5 ½ in white Trueflight shield-shaped feathers.

For nocks I used the new Tracer Lighted Nocks. Nothing shows a hit better. My arrows flew like darts with pin point accuracy. Nothing is better than having confidence in your shot placement when on the ground 8 yards from a bear.

Conclusion
My personal count of bow bagged bears reached 42 this year. And I've personally guided hundreds of hunters over the years. This past hunt, Don and I once again discussed our future as bear guides and outfitter. I asked the Duck, “How long can we keep this up?”  We broke into grins and nothing more was said.

And, in case you are wondering if there are still any bears here, check this out. The last night in camp we put a TrailTimer on the infamous bait named "Moose bait" and I picked it up after daylight. There were two pictures. In case you are wondering if this is a big bear, it is!

On to deer season. Good hunting ......................... Fred
