Rob also saw the small bear at various times, he stayed in the area. Later, two bears were within sight and a bigger bear walked to the bait. Towards the end of the day Rob saw the smaller bear 100 yards in the trees, it began busting limbs and small trees and popping it's jaws. He made a heck of a loud racket. The larger bear got up and ran off. Then the small bear came to the bait. At dark the bear was still there and Rob got down, the bear spooked. All the bears Rob saw were spooky and constantly watching the woods. The fact that the larger bear spooked at the noise the smaller bear made makes Rob think there is an even larger bear in this area. More...
"I was sitting there thinking that if I didn't get a bear Tucker (Rob's son) would be awful disappointed. He's been watching Fred's video Jaws N' Claws all the time and knows it word for word and he thinks Fred is one of the greatest bear hunters in the world -- and he expected us to get one." Rob thought that he saw a sapling tree shake, it was too large for a squirrel to shake it. He watched and finally saw the top of the bear's back 30 yards away. It ducked under a dead fall 20 yards away and stopped, looked up at the treestand. Then it walked away to the right and stood on top of a big log for a few seconds looking all around. It turned and came right to the bait. As soon as Rob saw a quartering away broadside shot in the making he drew and "let 'er rip." The bear jumped forward and went down under a tree. Quickly, Rob drew another arrow and when the bear stood back up he double lunged it. Fifteen yards later the bear went down and Rob heard the death moan. He knew the bear was dead and went to it. "The whole scenario probably wasn't a minute," he said. Rob's advice to new bear hunters is, "Check out who you're going with. Spend a few dollars making phone calls. Get references. The cheapest is not always the best." Rob and his dad Bob have had Wells Creek Outfitters for 15 years. They are in the Illinois Golden Triangle famous for trophy class whitetail bucks. Rob has been a bowhunter since he was 14, he is 42 now. "There were not many bowhunters in our area when I was growing up," he adds. Rob, when you get back home,
