2004 Fall Black Bear Bowhunt With Fred Lutger
by Robert Hoague

EQUIPMENT: Sponsors of the Bear Hunt
OUTFITTERS: Fred Lutger's Wilderness Hunts |
OUR GOAL: A Bear On The Ground From The Double Bull Blind The whole story.
HUNT STATUS:  Who Has Their Bear So Far? (The picture version.)

Joe Hajek
Joe had previously seen two bears at the Railroad blind and Fred suggested he change to a different site. They went to the Culvert. Joe started a bacon burn and climbed into the tree. As he got situated his bow slipped and fell to the ground. When he recovered it he checked it out and fount that his bowsight was loose. He straightened it up, tightened it and took a shot at a leaf 15 yards away. The sight was dead on.

Two hours later he heard the soft cracking of a branch. Immediately, a bear ran right under the treestand. It ran to the bacon burn, grabbed the can in his teeth ... and ran off.

A few minutes later the bear appeared by the bait and walked down a dead fall tree that had fallen right by the bait. He jumped down on the bait logs and pulled them around.
Joe told me, "I watched this for a couple minutes, waiting for him to give me a shot. He finally lifted his front leg and I took the shot. He jumped up on his back two legs and growled loudly and ran past me. I heard limbs breaking and hollering and finally there was a bunch of crashing limbs and I didn't hear him running anymore. I could actually see blood on the ground and on the limbs from my stand so I thought it was a good shot."

Joe got down and checked his arrow. It was bloody and he left the arrow there so they could trail the bear in the morning.

"We trailed it the next morning, it was a good blood trail and we walked right up to him."
This is Joe's first bear hunt. He has bowhunted 15 years and has taken deer, wild hogs and exotics in Texas.

His advice to new bearhunters is:  "I didn't know the right person to go with. There are outfitters that promise the moon and there are outfitters that produce. Fred Lutger Produces, he knows what he is doing and he is a trustworthy guy. One thing I want to say about this place is when you come here you are treated like family."

Joe Hajek owns Big Ten Taxidermy in Lavernia, Texas. He is a full time, full service taxidermist and has been in business 8 years. He does everything and has regular clients in several states.
Joe was extra hard working around camp, he always pitched in and was a pleasure to share a hunting camp with. Joe, download this link for a wallpaper sized picture of you and your bear.
