Bear Hunters of the 2004
Bowhunt In Ontario
Every year Fred Lutger opens the bear hunt with the toast, "To the bears." Then he explains that there are two kinds of people, "those who have killed bears and those who have not". He is totally sincere about it and every hunter seems to understand they are about to do something special. This year the 5 hunters who were the "have not type" switched over and became one of the special group who have killed bears. We welcome you Joe Hajek, Rusty Estes, Jeff Cook, Bob McNeff and Joe Cushman. Once again, Chef Klause and the Duck (Don Beckwith) baked, cooked, grilled and fried a bunch of good meals. Good eats, like stuffed french toast, perfect omelets, the best mashed potatoes on the planet, prime grade steaks, fried turkey and walleye and smallies caught in the lake behind the cabin. Everyone saw bears within bow range. We drug nine bears out of the woods. Rob and Bob McNeff are always a pleasure to be around. Tony Dukes was his usual glib self. And Fred, he does it all so easily. He pulls bears harder than anyone and takes a genuine interest in every hunter. Every
time I hear him tell a group that there are two kinds of people, I smile
inside, and hold my tongue so I don't ruin the magic.
