We had croutons left after today's lunch and Mike commented, "Do you want me to throw these croutons away?" Fred said no and to use them for the bear. Mike took them and scattered them around the bait and threw a bucked of candy on the bait and covered it with the logs. At 4:00, to his left, up on a ridge, in the pine trees, Mike saw a big bear walking along. He didn't come to the bait and disappeared in the thick brush. Mike said, "It got real quiet in the woods, dead silence, I stood up to relax and heard a loud crack. I thought that ain't no chipmunk, that's a bear. I sat down and two seconds later he came in like a freight train. He stopped to my left." Then he walked to the bait and started sucking up the croutons. Then he went to the candy. I drew back and he heard it. I let down. He knew something stunk in Denmark and he swung around behind the bait and walked toward the brush. He stopped at a log 25 yards from me and turned, he was broadside. I drew back on him. He looked at me. I was at full draw so I held, as soon as he turned his head away from me I fired the arrow. The bear ran 10 yards, stopped, fell over, death moaned, and died." Mike's advice to new bear hunters is: "Hunt with Fred Lutger, cause he is the bear man." Mike is a veteran bear bowhunter with several fine bear rugs taken in this camp. He is a regular in camp and on the days he cooks there just isn't any better eating. Mike Ditchler is a restaurateur
in the Chicago area. He has 3 restaurants, Chef Klause's Die
Bier Stube in Frankfort, Chef Klause's Country Cooking in Mokena and Chef
Klause's Orland Oasis in Orland Park. Mike, when you slow down enough to
see this, after being away on our hunt, here is the link to a wallpaper
sized picture for you.
