Mark Bronson

This is Mark's first bear hunt and confesses to his first bearhunting mistake. Yesterday he carried candy into the bait in a plastic bag and set it on top of the logs. In an hour he saw his first bear ever in the wild. Mark expected it to stay but it quickly but cautiously left. After the sun set below the horizon a bear came in, loudly, from another direction, breaking sticks and limbs as he came. The bear headed straight for the bait pile, grabbed the bag of candy and ran into the brush.

The next day Mark took his video camera to the stand. He forgot his tripod gadget and secured his video camera to a limb with camo tape  A bear came in after 7:30, it sniffed around the bait's logs. Mark had decided that if the bear appeared to be leaving he would shoot... if the ange was right. The bear started to leave .. quartering away to the right. A good shot angle. Mark is a Doctor and knows anatomy, so for a double lung shot, he aimed so the arrow would pass through the armpit on the opposite side. His shot was perfect. The bear bolted away and crashed through the very dense woods. The crashes stopped and Mark heard the death moan.

Daylight faded and Mark went to the road to be picked up. JimboTX picked him up and picked up Tony Dukes and myself.  I asked to see the shot on video. Things looked good to me so we went to the stand. The blood trail was profuse and it led us through a brutal tangle of trees, moss and brush, right to the bear. We drug it to the truck.

Mark said. "Without a doubt this is my greatest hunting experience in my 18 years of bowhunting. The bears are beautiful and fascinating. Fred Lutger's bear camp is everything I was looking for."

Advice to new bear hunters: "Listen to guys with experience to learn about a bear's habits. Learn what to look for in a bear to determine its size, and decide ahead of time what you are looking for. Be patient. When the bear shows up, take your first and best opportunity at a good shot. Oh, and don't forget the DEET and bug suit."
