(Thanks to Canoe Canada Outfitters in Atikokan, Ontario and Pat Cox of Atikokan IS for letting me update from their places of business in Atikokan, Ontario.) 2003 Fall Black Bear Bowhunt With Fred Lutger by Robert Hoague To This Hunts Home Page | Chris Fulton
Chris knocked another arrow, he was unsure of the hit, and he waited quietly and alertly for an hour. Then he walked to his arrow. It was entirely covered with bright red blood. Chris felt better, now he knew he had a good hit. He re-baited, reset the Trailtimer and waited to be picked up. They found the bear 25 yards from the bait in the dense brush. This is Chris's first bear. He told ne, "I've never seen a bear before and when it was eye to eye with me, made eye contact with me, it was a true adrenaline rush. My heart was pumping, it was cool. I wasn't scared when I saw the bear, I was more afraid that it would run off and I'd never see it again than I was of it. I wanted the bear. I was tickled and relieved when I picked up my arrow and saw the blood on the shaft, then I knew the bear was down and I had just killed a bear in Canada." Chris added, "I wish my 5 year old son was with me when we recovered the bear.." Chris's advice for new bear
hunters: "Be as quiet as you can, don't rush your shot, and wait for a
broadside shot. If you don't see a bear one day don't be discouraged."
