5th Day Of The Hunt
Donald Duck (Don Beckwith) carried in a coffee can with grease from the fish fry the night before. At 7:00 he heard movement in the woods. At 7:30 Don saw a bear in the brush. The bear moved in and out for 20 minutes and walked over near the tree the stand was in and stood up , smelling the air. Then he sat down and on his butt leaned back on a tree. Shortly, he scooted to the can of grease, grabbed it in his teeth, and went a short distance in the woods and began licking the grease from the can.  Both Don and the bear heard a loud crack in the woods. The bear stood up, looked in the direction of the sound, and ran away.

Don looked at his watch. It was just after 8:00. A huge bear circled the area. As he walked under a downed pine tree Don saw a broadside shot opportunity coming up. He drew. The bear stepped clear of the pine tree. Don aimed at the vitals and put his arrow where his pin was.

The bear ran in the same direction he came from and Don heard him "loosing his air" (more commonly referred to as the death moan.) Don waited 15 minutes and climbed down from his treestand. He was sure the bear was dead but he also was sure he couldn't budge the big bear by itself. So he went back to camp.  To Day 6, We Look For Don's Bear...

FISHING: The fishing up here is excellent. Here are pics of teenagers Ken Stachniak (left) and Mike Ditschler Jr. (right) with small mouth bass and Mike Jr. with a 23 inch Walleye. The two friends came up with Mike's father Mike Ditschler.
