A quick look around on the
hillside and we notice that there are a bunch of rubs within 40 yards of
this scrape. Not all of them were made this year either, scrapes with old
dried wood and bark are scattered around too, which is one of the tip offs
that this is a Core Rutting Area.
Bucks make scores of Rubs
but normally they are scattered around.all over their range. Sometimes
you will find a few in a line, often they will mark a trail into a thick
area. But setting up on every Rub you see will not be productive the majority
of the time. But if you find 3 or 4 dozen Rubs, both old and new, you may
well have found a Core Rutting area. Check it as the season progresses.
