The Whitetail Rut Is On Right Now . . . . Looking For Sign

Once we cross the fence and enter the woods we find that the Horse pasture is pretty narrow here, only about 100 yards wide.

The coastal field is on the high ground above the river and from the fence everything angles downhill and flattens out about 50 yards from the opposite side, which is where the grain fields are.

The hillside is hardwoods and cedars. The flat area is briars, more briars, thorn bushes, and cedars.

Where the ground flattens out we see a small clearing, about 20 by 25 yards in size. The trees and briars grow right up to the edges of the small clearing.

We can't tell it from here but this is the only well defined clearing in this piece of thick  woods for over a mile.

Next  we walk around the edge of the clearing (hint, hint) looking for rut sign.

Notice the pink flagging on the cedar tree on the right, the one with the low overhanging limbs.

Lets check the tree out ...
