Bowhunt
In Brown County, Illinois 1998
Brown
County, Illinois. Live, and on the Internet.
This
is a Video Bowhunt sponsored by Wayne Prejean of Non-Typical
Treestands and Pat Willis of Devastator Game Calls. We are bowhunting
deer at Hunting Unlimited
(host Larry Hanold). |
Sunday, Getting Organized
For The Hunt:
Leroy and I arrived late
afternoon and met Larry Hanold of Hunting
Unlimited. Larry showed us to our cabin and then gave me a place to
set up my computer and get online. Then we went to set up stands.
(Evening Meeting)
Wayne Prejean and Pat Willis discussed the video aspect of this bowhunt.
There are 10 people and they make up 5 video teams.
Monday,
Brown County, Day 1:
Morning Leroy
hunted and I videoed. It was 22 degrees, clear and still. We saw two does.
We hunted a draw between farm lots. There is Rusty Wire Roll where we park
the truck so I named this stand the Rusty Wire stand. This afternoon Leroy
Sisco (a Brigadier General) had to fly back to Texas for a meeting with
former President Bush (no kidding) -- so I am on my own tomorrow. Leroy
will be back tomorrow, late night.
The Other Action:
Wayne and Pat saw a doe group of 5 and two groups of 3 does, and 6 Gobblers.
Wayne almost got a shot at a Coyote. Scott Bare and Billy Davis (Devastator
Game Calls) saw 5 bucks but the close ones were young ones. Ben Athens
and Mike Norris, two traditional bowhunters from Georgia are hunting near
a clover field and have seen 23 deer. Tree were young bucks and one was
a 130 class. They have the best video footage so far.
Tuesday,
Brown County, Day 2:
This morning
I was exhausted and slept in. The other hunters should be in soon and I'll
report on them asap.
11:00am) Billy's
wife went into labor a few weeks early and he and Pat had to leave for
home. Hunting was slow this morning. Wayne & Scott saw 3 bedded does.
Ben & Mike saw a coyote.
(1:00am) I'm
headed for the Rusty Wire stand. I'll update when I get in.
(9:30pm) Short
update. I had a pleasant 3 hour sit. Saw about 40,000 squirrels but no
deer. Wayne & Scott saw some deer as they walked back to the truck.
From their stand Ben & Mike saw and videoed an 8-point, a 6-point,
a larger buck and 3 does.
Wednesday,
Brown County, Day 3:
Morning Leroy
returned early this morning so I let him sleep in. When he wakes up we
will eat and then go to the Rusty Wire stand and hunt the rest of the day.
Wayne & Scott
scouted and moved their stands to an area between a Cedar Thicket and a
recently harvested corn field. Their scouting turned up a ridge with deer
beds, lots of rubs and droppings, numerous scrapes and there were still
acorns on the ground.
Ben & Mike
had 3 does come by. They have been hunting approach routes to a clover
field. They put up new stands so they could get a good view of the West
End of the field.
(12:00am)
We chowed down and everyone is headed out to hunt. It is overcast today
with occasional gusts of wind. We need a change to start the deer moving,
and it looks like we are going to get it.
(5:34pm) It
was a beautiful afternoon in the Illinois woods. Leroy and I watched from
our stands. The deer watched from their beds. And our paths never crossed.
Everyone else will be in soon and we'll see what happened with them.
(9:00pm After Dinner)
Wayne & Scott saw 11 does, some close some far, and one large
buck (far). Ben & Mike watched 3 does feed across the colver field
and pass by them at 25 yards.
Thursday,
Day 4 in Brown County, IL:
(5:50am) It's
38, windy, and it couldn't be any darker if it was darker! We are moving
to a Thorn Tree Thicket where Wayne Prejean set up stands for Leroy and
I to hunt. Leroy gets to shoot this morning and I have video duty.
(10:36am)
Our stand in the Thorn Tree Thicket is on a Creek crossing. The banks of
the creek are very steep and the water looks pretty deep. But where we
are there is a gravel bar, the water flows around it, making for easy passage,
plus the banks on both sides are sloped less severely. A perfect deer funnel.
However, we didn't see any deer.
Wayne & Scott saw 3
does from their stand and one coming out. Ben & Mike saw one unidentified
deer. They scouted the area where they have been seeing deer enter the
clover field and moved stands to a promising new location.
(5:58pm) Leroy
and I hunted the Rusty Wire area. No deer visited us.
(7:46pm) Wayne & Scott
saw one doe and a button buck from their stand. Mike & Ben returned
to the clover field area and saw a doe and a fawn. And two Bald Eagles.
They got them all on video.
Friday,
in transit from Brown County, IL to Texas:
(7:00am) Our
Brown County, IL adventure at Hunting Unlimited is over. Leroy Sisco and
I are leaving for Texas as soon as I shut down the computer. Heck, tomorrow
I'll be bowhunting deer in my own back yard.
