Deer Season 1999: NOVEMBER
Thursday, Nov 11, the 36th day of Deer Season '99:
(8:00pm) Ricky Philippi, check this out. Your dad (Rick) saw 9 wild hogs, but he is buck hunting and there is no way he was going to disrupt the area by shooting a hog. They went straight to John, who was glad to see them. A large black one gave him a shot and at dark he and Rick loaded the wild hog in his truck. And here are John & the Wild Hog. And a Group Pic of Rick, John and Rob. Incidentally, Rob was the only one who saw deer, he got a shot at a doe but missed.
(Afternoon hunt, 3:00pm) Today my buds Rick Philippi and John Askew are down. They are bowhunting the thick brush in the Back 200 and John's friend Rob Lowe is hunting at T.E.'s Folly.
Friday, Nov 12, the 37th day of Deer Season '99:
(Afternoon hunt) From his tripod in the Back 200 Rick Philippi saw a bomber 10-point jump our South fence and wind through the woods, scent checking the ground as he came nearer, but 50 yards was as close as he got. Rob Lowe was in the treestand at the Point less than an hour when he saw 5 does coming single file down the fence to his right. He got ready, because if they stayed on course they would walk right in front of him. He was not disappointed and as they filed by within 15 yards he aimed at a large doe and made a vital shot. John saw the wild hogs in the brush when he bowhunted the Back 200. On the way out he picked up Rob and his already field dressed doe. And here are Rob Lowe and John Askew with the doe Rob harvested this afternoon.
(Morning hunt) Rick, John and Rob hunted but the deer stayed home.
Saturday & Sunday, the 38-39th day of Deer Season '99:
Robbie and I hunted but we only saw about a dozen deer total. Nothing eventful. Rifle season began a week ago (you can bowhunt in Texas during rifle season, and that's what we do) and it's normal for the activity to slow after opening weekend.
Monday, the 40th day of Deer Season '99:
I bowhunted at the Rolled Wire and saw 16 does and 2 young bucks. I've got a heck of a cold and am going to the Dr instead of bowhunting tomorrow. Rick Philippi and Doug W are coming down tomorrow (Tuesday) to deerhunt 2 days.
Tuesday, the 42th day of Deer Season '99:
Rick Philippi and Doug W are down and will bowhunt in the morning. Rick is hunting Rick's Hot stand and Doug will be in the Strip.
Wednesday, the 43th day of Deer Season '99:
(Morning) Rick Philippi bowhunted Rick's hot stand but it wasn't' too hot today. No deer. Doug W saw a crippled doe get romanced by a young buck. I took Rick to the December Tree area and showed him the stands. He will bowhunt there in Thursday morning.
(Afternoon) Rick bowhunted in the Back 200 but nothing moved. Doug hunted the Strip but there was some loud commotion, talking and clanking, on the adjacent property and no deer moved. I was at the Gate area and saw 7 does move through, browsing as they went. John Askew arrived tonight and will hunt in the morning.
Thursday, Nov 18, the 44th day of Deer Season '99:
(Afternoon) Rick Philippi had a nice 8-point come down the trail he is bowhunting near in the Back 200. The buck was looking around for does and moving slowly. At the last minute Rick decided to pass him up. Doug W hunted his Horse Pasture stand and saw a group of Wild Turkeys and 2 does, all of them not far off but too far off for a bow shot. John Askew hunted the Pocket but the deer took the afternoon off. Clay hunted the Point again and saw 2 bucks (he is hunting as a Guest and guests can't shoot bucks on our lease.) After the hunt Rick and Doug went back home.
(Morning) Rick Philippi hunted the December Tree core rutting area and the rut was going on strong. At daylight a doe walked to the main scrape at the December Tree, urinated in it, and waited by the scrape. Soon 5 does passed close to the main scrape. Another doe entered the small clearing and the waiting doe kept it from getting on the main scrape. There is another scrape at the clearing's edge and the rejected doe went to it, pawed the dirt, licked the overhanging cedar branches and waited. Rick heard a grunt from the hill and a high wide Fork Horn walked into the clearing. His head was wobbling nervously like he was insane. His tongue stuck way out and was licking his nose and lips. He eyed the two does.
The one at the main scrape ran by him and turned uphill. they were off. Another grunt, and an 8-point came from the briars to Rick's right. The remaining doe bolted into the woods and that chase was on.
There are several scrapes in the immediate area and Rick could see other does on the hillside. In a few minutes, a doe ran through the small clearing in front of Rick and 3 young bucks charged after her. Uphill, Rick saw a huge bodied Buck walking with a doe. He could see that the antlers were wide and heavy but he couldn't see them clearly because of the brush and trees between them. They were in the area a while but never got close enough for a shot opportunity.
In all Rick saw 7 different bucks and over 20 does this morning. Clay saw 4 does and a yearling at the Point. Doug passed on 3 young bucks that were investigating a doe near his stand (at the Strip stand). John Askew saw several does, a Forky and a Spike. I'm still fighting a cold and didn't hunt.
Friday, Nov 19, the 45th day of Deer Season '99:
(Morning) John Askew hunted at the Pocket in the same stand were I got the 8-point in October. Looking through the limbs of the clump of cedars (where I have the stand), John saw a big deer approaching his area. In a few minutes the deer walked into John's shooting lane and he could see it was an 8-point, and a good one. John already had his bow in position so he began his draw. Woops, his arrow squeaked on his rest. The buck looked in his direction. John held still, his bow at mid draw, and hopped for the best. The buck looked away. John pulled the string back all the way. Squeak. The buck looked at him again. And once again he looked away, unable to figure out what the noise was about. John aimed carefully and released. The buck ducked his arrow and ran into the brush. Clay bowhunted in the Back 200 and saw a few does that were too far off for a shot. Afterward, they loaded up their gear and returned home.

Bowhunting Whitetails @ Wells Creek Outfitters - in Brown County, IL. Every year this area consistently produces trophy class Whitetail Bucks for bowhunters. This is the scoop on our hunt in 1999.

the Beginning (Scouting)
Looking around after the season is over always helps me put a few more of the pieces in the deerhunting puzzle. It's as much a part of the hunt as the hunting season. I started scouting the first weekend in February. Here Are My Scouting Logs For 1999

Venado Loco's Great West Texas Bowhunt - Oct '99
By email I received an invitation for myself and one friend to bowhunt with Venado Loco at his 6,300 acre deer lease in the desert near Del Rio, Texas.

This is as far West as Whitetails go in the Southwest and Venado said that this bowhunt would be different from other deer hunts I was familiar with ... he wasn't kidding. Logs & Pics of the Venado Loco hunt.
Brian Pullam & Chrissy of the YBC Bowhunt Texas
- Brian Pullam, YBC Team Leader, and Chrissy, YBC Columnists bowhunted Whitetails at my place in Texas and 16 year old Chrissy brings home her first bow harvest.

August 18: I went on a Deer Spotlight Survey with our area's Texas Parks & Wildlife Biologist and, believe me, the deer population is not just a wild guess. Deer Spotlight Survey.
