| Bowhunter Magazine's
Ultimate Hunting Adventures Video Collection, by Jon E. Silks
For over 30 years Bowhunter Magazine has been entertaining archers by
the thousands with its ever popular publication. It has withstood the test
of time and continues to bring great how-to, equipment and story type articles
to the bowhunting world.
In
the past ten years another form of media has steadily grown to become a
giant in the industry -- videos. A good bowhunting video can do wonders
for just about anything that ails a hardcore bowhunter. I have lost count
of the number of times I have sat down with family or friends to watch
a bowhunting video, both home made and professional productions.
Bowhunter has come to the game with a couple of heavy hitters for their
new video series entitled, "Ultimate Hunting Adventures". If you
have been around even a short time in the bowhunting world you will certainly
recognize the names of the heavy hitters I speak of -- Drury and Kisky.
These two teams account for some of the most fantastic whitetail footage
ever made available to archers across the nation.
Unbelievable footage, new formats, ups and downs, behind the scenes
reality, new comers and old timers will capture your interest, but primarily
this series is defined by the majestic whitetail that runs a common bond
through all of our hearts and draws us together as bowhunters.
I have viewed many hours of whitetail entertainment produced by these
two teams but seldom have I seen them be this real. Mark and Terry Drury,
especially, are heard emphasizing friendship and camaraderie while at the
same time letting us in on the sometimes trying times that they experience
throughout a rigorous season.
I received five videos from this collection to view; On the Move:
Dare to Be Different, Whitetail Extreme II, Reality Whitetails, Timber
Dreams and Whitetail Extreme III.
On the Move: Dare to be Different was unique in that the Drury
Brothers challenged all of their subcontractors to take a friend or family
member bowhunting, someone not familiar with hunting on camera, and capture
them harvesting an animal on video. It was a welcome diversion from the
norm and quite a few newcomers were afforded an experience of a lifetime.
Moon phases, trail cameras, stand approach timing, calling and passing
on smaller bucks were all discussed in this volume. Some of the highlights
for me included Melody Risings great non-typical, Josh Phillips excitement,
Keith Kuehn's 2-buck experience and the heart of Rod Wilson who guided
his 70 year old father, Jerry, on a successful adventure.
The second video I viewed, Whitetail Extreme II, had the absolute
best intro of any hunting movie I have ever seen. It is worth buying just
to see the intro! This installment had a little bit of everything from
huge bucks taken by Jay Gregory and Lee Lakosky to the harsh realities
of naturally occurring buck mortality. A familiar cast of Kisky, Profant,
Gregory and Lakosky suit up to escort the viewer through a barrage of extreme
whitetail footage.
Reality Whitetails takes the audience behind the scenes to show
some of the work and set-up that goes into these productions. The first
scene takes place during a Drury videographer meeting and the last is of
the brothers having a "misunderstanding". This video brings to the forefront
the fun times and the difficult times but in the end it is still about
the friendships. Some of the highlights include the Box Blind setup, Brad
Ruck's Bobcat sighting, Lance Chapman's twice hit buck and Ben Resin's
Ohio monster. My favorite hunt was Ben taking that huge 9-point in my home
state of Ohio. Oh, I almost forgot the Crazy Scraper Buck -- that is one
you've got to see to believe!
The next video on my list was Timber Dreams. This segment focused
to some extent on what hunters dream about in the off season but the eye
catching big, and I mean big, buck footage was by far the center piece!
I would definitely rate this among the top of any bowhunting video on the
market. You will experience a buck taken in velvet, a breeding scene and
footage of one absolutely incredible MONSTER caught on camera by the man
that started the camo craze, Jim Crumley. I liked how Mark candidly spoke
about the down side of hunting such a long season and Terry emphasizing
the value of hunting partners.
Whitetail Extreme III, while a good video, was probably my least
favorite of the bunch. The video was done well and has one of the largest
whitetails ever harvested on video, Don Kisky's 213 4/8" Giant. The only
thing that it lacked was direction. A different format was also used with
trail camera pictures of many of the bucks harvested and the score of each
buck flashed on the screen one the hunter reached the downed animal. I
personally like the score being posted because it gives me a chance to
see how well I can judge size in a short amount of time. A mini game within
the video! Another upside to the video is the emphasis on friendships and
sharing. My favorite scene was definitely the huge buck Don harvested.
This collection is a definite MUST SEE for any bowhunting video buff
like me. Would I change anything? Well, it would have been nice to see
M.R. James, Dwight Schuh and Jeff Waring involved in a few hunts. Otherwise
I think they are hard to beat. There were times while watching the videos
that I got that "I can''t wait to get into the woods" feeling. Another
thrill comes from watching the big/huge buck scenes. It gives you a sense
of wonder -- you just never know what might show up within bow range!
