DAY #6
When
we awoke for day six it was near sixty degrees and the wind was blowing
slightly. We decided to hunt Lake Mon’s again after letting it cool off.
Dad wasn't feeling up to par so he would sit this one out.
Coondog and I were in the stands well before daylight so that everything
would have time to calm down. As the sun was cresting the top of the trees
I made my first set of calls. The response was one I hadn't counted on.
Across the lake a pack of wolves started howling in the distance. I
knew that it wasn't a good sign so I didn't’ call again for two hours.
The bugs were biting worse than any of the previous days. You couldn't
help but swat at them non-stop. The temperature was close to 80 degrees
by 10:30 and I had lost 2 pounds to the black fly Red Cross blood unit.
Coondog agreed that it was time to go.
After
lunch Coondog and I took care of the bear baits and fished for a while.
As we were fishing we decided to stay I the canoe during the evening hunt
and cover a lot of ground calling. If we got a response we would get to
shore and try him from the ground.
This was a good plan except for the part where the moose had to respond.
In all my attempts at calling I had not had one response from a bull moose.
I was really starting to think that it was my calling. It's kind of like
going turkey hunting for your first time and not knowing if your call sounds
as it should. Well, needless to say after paddling 5 to 6 miles we had
no luck.
The best thing about the evening hunt was that as soon as the bugs would
get to us we would leave them behind. That was the first victory we had
against Team Red Cross.
We had a nice dinner and made plans to hunt Lake Dumbbell on day 7.
Just hunting for five good minutes. Maybe tomorrow.
