Steve Johnson's List Or Columns
Never judge a book by its cover or an archery product by its name.
When I first heard of Spot-Hogg Archery Products the first thing that came
to me was the non-appealing name. The company defines the name as
"an archer who devours the center of the target consistently, leaving no
room in the spot for others". After shooting the Hogg-It sight it
didn't take long to see why that definition fits.
The first thing I noticed when I picked up the sight was just how bright
the .019 site pins were. They are housed within an ingenious turret
that not only allows for plenty of light to penetrate but also allows for
maximum adjustment. Each pin can be moved individually along horizontal
or vertical planes. Individually on a horizontal plan by an Allen
screw positioned at the end of the turret. An inner sleeve extends
from within the turret as the Allen screw is turned. Vertical positioning
is changed by adjusting two Allen screws within the base of the pin guard.
Gang adjustments can also be made horizontal or vertical by utilizing a
"no clamp" Allen screw. This means that no lock down screw needs
to be loosened before making adjustments. This ensures no fumbling
with multiple screws when making any adjustments. An added feature
to make sure t the pins are lined up is a fine wire running vertically
through the center of the pin guard. Coupling this with a built in
level allows you to check your form at full draw. I feel features
such as these are a bonus when shooting at distances over 30 yards, especially
3D.
What sets the Hogg-It sight above others is that you can make adjustments
to the 2nd and 3rd Axis. I find these adjustments are necessary for
someone who may canter their bow while at full draw. By adjusting
Allen screws on the bottom of the sight arm you can adjust the vertical
orientation of level. This adjustment tilts the sight either up or
down in a half moon circular pattern. Similar adjustment can be made
to the horizontal orientation by Allen screws along the right side of the
sight arm. Caution should be taken, as this adjustment should be
done while the bow is a full draw.
The Hogg-It is an engineering phenomenon with no skimping on materials.
Many of today's sights include plastic pieces that break or wear out in
time. The only two pieces that I noticed not made of metal were the
fiber optic pins and level. Machined from aluminum to exact specifications
is evident by the precision of the fittings. No fitting was overlooked
especially in the "no clamp design" where adjustments are rock solid.
No need to worry about them moving once all adjustments are made.
The site mounts to the bow utilizing two AMO standard mounting holes.
A dovetail groove allows for insertion of the sight bar and is tightened
down utilizing a nylon tipped setscrew. Multiple index holes along
the sight bar allow the archer to place the sight at a desired distance
from the riser.
The bright .019 pins use their size to great advantage allowing you
to concentrating on your target. Larger pins obstruct part of a target
at longer ranges. One disadvantage to smaller pins is that they don't
allow much light causing the pin to be dim. I did not find this a
problem however with the Hogg-It.
So if you feel the need to devour the center of the target while leaving
no room for others then the Spot-Hogg Hogg-It site should be the one on
your bow.
Design - 5 of 5
Without a doubt the Hogg-It sight is one of the best sights available
today. The fine adjustments that can be made to all pins are ingenious.
The 2nd and 3rd axis adjustments are well thought out and well engineered.
Price - 3.5 of 5
With a list price around $160 this sight is by no means for the everyday
archer. But then innovation, top design, top quality and materials
always cost more. For the 3D archer who wants the best and most out of
a sight this is the one. For a hunting sight I believe it is truly
overkill. The Hogg-It Sight is that good.
Features - 4 of 5
I really like the white circle inscribed within the pin guard.
It increases accuracy by aiding in centering the pins within the peep.
Five .019 pins are more than enough for varying distances.
The built in level with the pin guard allows the archer to check form quickly
while at full draw.
