Day #1

Turtle Brings In The First Wild Hog ...
Rick and Ricky Philipppi went hunting immediately when we arrived at the Texas S. They hunted together and saw several groups of hogs. Ricky got close twice but the hogs gave him the slip at the last minute.

Turtle hunted in a ground blind that Merle Smith had set up expecially for his use. As Turtle waited in the blind a lone 20 pound pig came through the area and got curious about the blind. It walked over and poked it's nose on the fabric and began pushing at it with its nose. Suddenly it came through the opening in the blind and started pushing on Turtle's walker with its nose. Turtle reached back and slapped the small pig. It fled at once.

As the little pig left Turtle saw a group of 25-30 hogs coming toward him from the rear of the blind. They circled him and the largest hog came towards him and Turtle's arrow met it at 10 yards. Turtle saw the arrow when it exited and it carried on into the woods. (Muzzy 3-blade) The hog slowly moved away 6 steps and expired. Turtle radioed Merle. He had the first wild hog of the hunt.

Meanwhile Rick and Ricky Philippi were in the North end of the Swamp when Rick saw a good sized spotted hog. The hogs were moving away from them but suddenly turned and headed in their direction on a trail that came near them. The area was very thick and Rick looked for a shooting lane out ahead of the group and saw it. The hog stopped just short of the shooting lane and waited. Then the boar walked three steps forward.

Rick's shot was on the money and the boar ran 40 yards into the dense swamp and they heard it splash to a stop and thrash in the water. They recovered it right away and dragged it out of the water and mud and called Merle on the radio to come with the 4-wheeler.

Merle generously drove me to the Pond #2 area with my Loc-On Lem treestand and ladder. I looked around and selected a tree close to the blow downs where I had slipped up on the hogs on the last hunt here. I hung the ladder sections and set the treestand.

After I trimmed a few small limbs out of the way 4 wild hogs cruised through and splashed throughout the edge of the pond.

All right! I am set up for tomorrow morning. I'm pumped. Rick and Ricky are pumped. Turtle is pumped.

Pond #2 is a combination of fallen trees and hard wood trees. Here is the ground level view of the pond behind my treestand.
