From my stand at #16 I saw
a group of rams in the distance. They were coming in my direction and walked
right under my tree.

I knew Mike Ditchler wanted
to hunt them but so far he had not seen any when we had time to hunt them.
I expected Bill Carpenter to pick me up shortly so I got down and located
them.
They were very co-operative
photo wise and let me get some pictures.
Back in camp I told Chef
Klaus (Mike Ditchler) I had some rams located. After lunch Billy Don took
us to look for them. They had moved so we circled the area in the truck.
Bingo, we saw them on a rocky hillside. They were 100 plus yards off the
ranch road and had seen us too. We didn't want to spook them by stopping
so we kept driving until we were a good ways out of sight.
Then we parked and headed
for the rams.
When Mike and I saw them
again they were browsing in a grassy spot at the top of the rocky hillside.
We kept trees between us and luckly got close enough for a bow shot.

Mike saw a Black Hawaiian
Ram, there was only one and of course that was the one he wanted.
It was also the only ram
that was just out of bow range.
We eased around to the right
to cut off the black ram. Things were looking good when a bedded ram, that
we hadn't seen, jumped up and ran away. All the rams followed the ram that
had seen us, but they walked.
Meanwhile, Billy Don was
a couple hundred yards away trying to find us with his binoculars. He was
surprised when the group of rams walked out of the brush, saw him, and
turned tail. They found the nearest trail and trotted away from Billy Don.
It
just so happens that that trail went right by Mike and I.
When we saw the rams top
the hill 100 yards away I hit the gound and Mike hid behind two trees.
We weren't sure what which way the would go and it was almost too good
to be true when we realized the rams were on the trail near us. The lead
rams trotted by 20 yards to our right.
I kept my head down, pointed
my camera at the action and took a few pics, hoping to catch something
as it all came down.
The other rams slowed down
to a walk and filed by. Mike hadn't shot and I'm wondering if something
has gone wrong.
I glanced toward Mike
and the rams. The black Hawaiian ram is dead last. Mike is waiting for
it.
The Black Hawaiian passes
us and Mike takes advantage of the perfect quartering away angle and draws,
aims and shoots. The hit looks good and sounds right. The ram runs past
a few rams and stops in 50 yards. And we see it go down.

ram.
