DAY SIX:
This
is the first warm morning of the hunt. A lone impala buck walks by at mere
feet, unaware of our presence. No sooner is he gone than a wildebeest bull
makes a solo appearance. except for the parade of warthogs, the rest of
the morning was uneventful.
My buddy, David Betot
had checked the moon phases with his GPS and recorded the optimum activity
times for game. It had been true every day and today was no exception.
We were delayed at camp at lunch time helping other hunters locate a shot
wildebeest and this put us late getting back to the water at the exact
time the GPS said game would be active and it was right. We spooked off
nearly 100 zebra and wildebeest. Another lesson learned late.
At 5:15 warthogs came to
the water hole. Finally the one I'd been waiting for came in close enough
for a shot. Black hair standing tall on his back, he sported tusks of over
ten inches. I nocked an arrow and raised my bow.
Remember I was bowhunting.
So the only area, only a little bitty area that I could not get a shot
at was exactly where he watered.
I nearly swallowed my tongue
when just past the boar I spotted a stallion zebra. These animals exude
a presence one would not at all expect, I was as excited as when the kudu
came in.
He appeared and stood still
at thirty yards but once again at a place the cumbersome hide would not
allow a shot. The limpopo brush consumed the zebra just as it did the remaining
sunlight. I will not sleep well tonight, a new excitement has been kindled
in my mind. Now waterbuck was on the second burner.
