Doug Crabtree is bowhunting on a private
ranch, the Hawkins Ranch, owned by Arlan Hawkins. The ranch manager is
Jackie Bishop.
David Mills is hunting as well and they
are also joined by red fishing Charter Captain Sly Dixon. The ranch is
3,500 acres and for the Opening Morning hunt they all (4) went to pasture

Day 3
Extremely high winds and
cloudy sky. Definitely not a good morning. It was impossible for any turkeys
to hear the hunters calls. They drove around on the ranch until noon and
finally wind settled to a reasonable pace. They saw some turkeys in the
palmettos.
Doug put the blind on the
edge of the palmettos and called. Without a sound the birds entered the
field and they all ran to the blind -- 14 toms.
Doug was ready and put an
arrow through one 5 yards away. It collapsed and never moved.
They took pictures and broke
the blind down.
On the way out Jackie pointed
out two hogs in the palmettos and said, "go get him boy."
The stalk was on and as
Doug came into range a boar walked into the field. Doug took its picture.
Doug made a killing shot
on the wild boar. It bolted back into the palmettos and went down with
a crash. They quickly recovered it and took a picture.
Doug had to leave for home
at 5:29pm so they returned to the ranch and packed for the airport.
When he had a lay over in
Detroit, Michigan Doug Crabtree phoned me and told me the good news, the
first Osceola tom was taken.
