Second Day

Robert - Lots of gobbles around me this morning. My Pro Ears were picking up ones way in the distance too. A lone hen flew down into the field from up the hill and walked into the woods. The gobbles got distant. Nothing else happened and I moved to the closest corner of the field so I could see more of the surrounding area.

At 11:12  I answered a deep toned gobble. We went back and forth as the booming gobbles got closer. He walked out of the woods and looked at my decoys and and strutted up. Then he looked into the field and back at my decoys, and back and forth.

I checked the field. Yikes! Hens were hens on the far side.

I called at the gobbler and that held him in place for a while.

But eventually he went to the hens. Three jakes were with the 3 hens and the boss gobbler took over the show.

The turkeys moved parallel to the far edge and the rope beard gobbler strutted his stuff.

A jake strutted up to the rope beard and the "boss" chased him around. The hens fed all the time. After over an hour of strutting and doing his boss gobbler thing the rope beard walked away from the group. I yelped and cut at him. He came closer and I got a better picture. This is a ground dragger, fat Tom turkey. And he was through wasting his time with this group.

He turned and strolled up the hill close to the road I walked down. But the show was not over, in fact a very cool new show was about to begin.

The 3 jakes started chasing each other and one jumped into the air and dug his spurs into a jake. I started taking pictures and made a Photo Gallery of them for ya. Enjoy...

I took the first picture of these birds at 11:19 and the last at 12:45. Fred wanted me to hunt another area tomorrow and I carried out the blind and gear at 1:00.

Fred Lutger - Fred heard the most gobbling ever. A dozen toms gobbled in the trees. Fred called (with the Aluminum Woodhaven slate) and it got constant answers. Three gigantic longbeards crossed the creek and stayed behind the blind. Fred closed all the blinds window except one to the decoy, He had his bow in hand, waiting for them to walk around to the decoy. Two more toms gobbled in the creek bottom and the 3 toms went to them.

Fred opened a shooting space in his T5 blind to see the field and saw a jake and hen crossing the field. Gobbles continued until 1:00.

Doug Crabtree - Doug was sick and didn't hunt
