Dec
3 - Freak!
Morning: Another
frost. All the regular grass died after the first frost and it turned to
tans and browns. My Food Plot is a vibrant green
in an ocean of newly dead grass. I hunted in one of the 2 stands I have
there.
This cold snap has really
made a big change in the traffic my Food Plot is getting. Mainly, the big
change is that new bucks are suddenly showing up. Once it was light enough
to see ok I saw the buck with a broken main beam that I saw yesterday.

Wait a minute! He has antlers
on both sides ... with 4 separate fingers sticking up. HIs right beam is
kinda odd too. A freak set of antlers. Back where I first saw the freak
a young 6-pt came out of the draw and walked up to the freak buck. It's
still early and the light isn't quite good enough for a great picture but
you
can see the freak antlers in the photo below.

The bigger, older buck wasn't
in the same friendly mood, he bristled up and stiff legged towards the
sixer and moved him back into the woods to our left. Meanwhile a doe
came up behind the bucks.

From the edge of the woods
the freak saw the doe and walked up to it. The doe changed directions and
they walked along together. In the last picture the buck is marking a limb
on the over head branch while the doe munches on some oats in my food plot.

The two deer disappeared
into the draw. Maybe he will be back when the sun is up higher and I can
get better pictures. The narrow 6-pt returned and he and a another young
buck chased several does away. What a great morning.
Food
Plot
With the coming of the killing
frost much of the lush vegetation and huge crop of acorns on the ground
have died or gone bad. My green food plot really stands out now in Early
December. I worked with Mike Massey of PlotSpike
Seed to be sure I planted what would grow well in our area. Mike
suggested PlotSpike Forage Oats and Premium Mix. We planted the oars first
and then made 3 small sections of the Premium Mix. The Premium Mix started
growing in 3 days. The oats, however, didn't come up until we had a real
gully washer rain. Then it leaped out of the ground.
Wild Turkeys cover the plot
from the get go. Deer came intermittently. Until now. The joint is jumping.
