Dennis
And The Brady BowTech Buck
by
Don "The Duck" Beckwith
Last
fall I hunted with Dennis Schirato at his Throckmorton lease and his Texas
Brady ranch. Dennis and his friends are gun hunters and I am a bow hunter.
When I went to Throckmorton with Dennis, he, Matthew, Shane, Matt, Chris,
and Grady were all there with me. The gun hunters had no shots fired. I
had no place to bow hunt so Dennis and I moved his tripod in the woods
close to a game trail.
As
a guest, I was only allowed a doe and I managed to take an old doe and
a 200lb. hog with my BowTech Patriot bow and Innerloc EXP
Expandable broadhead.
This
got Dennis thinking about bow hunting and he mentioned that he bought a
bow ten years ago and harvested a small buck with it. He had not used it
since.
During
the 2004 spring turkey season Dennis invited me to go to Brady to hunt
wild turkey. I brought a Double Bull ground blind with me, and we set it
up where Dennis knew there were turkeys in the area.
The
next morning we went to the Double Bull blind. I put out my decoys.
When we heard gobblers I called with my slate call. Two longbeards
came right up to the blind five yards away, and Dennis shot his first spring
turkey with a 12 gauge Bennelli.
Now
it was my turn. I called in another gobbler ... but missed it with my bow.
We stayed there another hour, and heard another gobbler. He was coming
in.
Dennis
said “don’t miss this one, it’s double bearded and dragging the ground.”
I stuffed him good with my BowTech Patriot, and I recovered the gobbler
forty yards into the brush.
Dennis,
a first time turkey hunter -- after gun hunting all his life -- got
interested in bowhunting again, and he had the perfect place to bow hunt.
Dennis
got his bow out and we went to see Richard at Lake Country Archery at Lake
Fork, Texas to get a new string. He had a wheel bow with cables.
Dennis
looked at the new BowTech bows on the shop's wall and asked Richard to
show him a bow. When we left Lake Country Archery, Dennis had a Bow
Tech Mity Might fully equipped. Richard set up Dennis with a Montana
Gold sight, a Whisker Biscuit rest, and a Cobra release.
Richard
paper tuned the bow so it shot perfect bullet holes. Then he gave Dennis
some experienced shooting tips and set the bow at a comfortable draw weight.
Dennis also bought a dozen Carbon Extreme arrows cut to size, two packages
of Interlock EZP Expandable broadheads, and a bow case for his new bowhunting
gear.

When
we arrived at my house Dennis started shooting. After three groups he was
in the 10 ring, and before he was through practicing he actually Robin
Hooded an arrow.
October
bow season came along and Dennis invited me to his Brady ranch in Texas.
We had already set up a bow stand before season so I took several pictures
of bucks and does from the stand.
The
first evening we hunted Dennis was ready. He was scent free and camouflaged.
At 3:00pm I dropped Dennis off and went to my stand. When I picked
Dennis up, he was waiting in the road, and said he had one down.
He could see the deer, but did not want to go to him just in case.
We
went back to the lodge to kill some time and went back 30 minutes later
with lights. The deer was lying right where Dennis had seen him.
It’s a nice 9 point with 2 kickers, which makes the buck an eleven point.

(R)
I took a picture of Dennis's buck in September. (L) Dennis Schirato! and
his hill country buck.
I think
we have a new bowhunter in our midst. The first time in the woods
with a bow, and he kills the second biggest buck in his life.
Good
going Dennis Schirato!
