Cynthia
Colon - 2003 Ohio Deer Hunt
by
Jon Ickes
Cynthia was hunting (on November 10, 2003) along
the edge of the swamp in Jackson County, Ohio. She was in a ladder
stand that that had been set early in the season. The stand had seen
quite a bit of activity and there had been glimpses of some pretty large
deer including the day the stand was set.
Doug
Crabtree Sr. and Cynthia Colon on November 10, 2003
On the Friday before November 10, Cody and I
put a hanger next to the ladder stand in the same tree. Right after
hanging the stand a deer approached us from the West and stood looking
at us from beside a tree about 35 yards away. (We would see the same
big-bodied deer with the chocalate colored rack about five days later.)
We hunted the whole weekend and Cynthia decided to stay a few extra days
due to the buck activity we were seeing. (Poor Cody and I had to
go back to school and work.)
During her evening hunt, with Doug Crabtree Sr.
on the rattling horns and sitting in the hanger stand. They didn't see
anything until almost quitting time. Doug alerted her that a deer
was coming towards the stand. She could not see him because the deer was
directly behind her. She stood and waited.
Cynthia whispered to Doug, "Is it a buck or doe".
Doug, now eyelocked with this nice buck, could not respond. Cynthia
saw the deer almost directly under the tree and drew. (She still
didn't know it was a buck until she had her pin locked on the kill zone.)
She released and the buck piled up thirty-five yards uphill from the stand.
When she came home she held out her bloody hand
with the undisputable evidence that she had placed her shot well; a heart
with the four-bladed (Muzzy) cut directly in the middle. (She also
produced a large set of bloody testicles.)
