Fred Lutger - Quest For  A Bear On The Ground

Second Hunt:  For lunch today the Duck and Joe Hajek fired up the outdoor fryer and fried a whopping bunch of smallies and walleyes and a mountain of french fries. You can't beat it.

We arrived at the Caution stand a few minutes after 3:00pm and got ready to hunt. This afternoon was warmer than recent days and the bugs were out. I set up both my digital camera and Fred's video camera on tripods. To take a digital picture all I had to do was touch the button.

Three hours passed and a branch broke a good ways off . We heard  a bear circle us and then saw splotches of black fur near the left side of our small, narrow clearing.

Suddenly the bear Woofed loudly, slapped some bushes and ran away.

I asked Fred if the bear would be back after making such a ruckus.

"Yes," he answered quietly. "He will probably do the same thing 2 or 3 times before he settles down and comes in."

Twenty minutes later the bear snuck in and did a repeat on the woof and run act.

"He's definitely going to come back now," Fred whispered.

Later, Fred pointed toward the ditch area and signaled that the bear was coming. I already knew, the bear had the inside of my nose dancing again.

Soon we heard soft footsteps as the bear walked down the ditch that was a few yards to our left, it sounded like it was going to walk out  4 yards from us. But it didn't.

Bingo, in a minute we saw the bear on the left side of the bait logs, just inside the trees.

It stepped out.

The bear stepped into the clear, walked to the logs, and moved them around.

This was a big bear all right. Everything was falling in place.  NEXT...
